Technical Editor Peter Coombes reports from Germany on the latest diagnostic product developments and trends

Extract from Autotimes October 2002

Sykes-Pickavant has moved forward in the electronic tools sector in recent years and this movement was re-enforced after the acquisition by Facom Tools some time back. The product range centres around the Smart hand-held tool that, although first shown two years ago, has benefited from the planned updating programme that is intended to keep the equipment smart all the time.

Smart is in simple terms a package of electronic test tools. Primarily, Smart comprises a scan tool (a built in Sykes-Pickavant code reader), a multi channel oscilloscope, a multi-meter and a sensor signal simulator. The touch screen simplifies the process of operation for the technician, and I have always liked the size, weight and feel of the product.

The Smart functions are, of course, upgradeable with the option for internet based updates. However, because the scan tool capability is based on the well-established Sykes-Pickavant ACR code reader product, the various application cartridges are compatible with Smart.

The oscilloscope provides all the required functions for ignition testing, but the lab scope facility and multi-meter functions allow the user to clearly view the signals and values measured from sensors and electronic modules. The built-in sensor simulator provides a range of selected simulated signals that go beyond the norm. As well as the usual range of AC and DC signals, the simulator emulates many of the signals found on automotive applications such as TDC references on crankshaft sensor signals.

The Smart includes a considerable amount of built-in operator support and in total the product represents a strong package of electronic system test capability, which although inevitably comprehensive, is in fact easy to use.

Sykes-Pickavant was also displaying its hand-held exhaust gas analyser, which is a good partner for the Smart electronic tester. In addition to the usual four gases, the gas analyser has the option for NOx testing and it also has the ability to store up to 255 tests for recall or for printing, which can be achieved via an infrared link to the printer. Also on show was a new stand-alone sensor simulator that now has the same capability as the simulator built into the Smart.
